Visitor's registers. These volumes were signed by visitors to the Michigan buildings or exhibits at the Centennial Expositions held in Philadelphia and New Orleans. The Philadelphia extravaganza is familiar to all and needs no description here. The World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition opened in New Orleans on December 1, 1884, and closed May 31, 1885. The $2,000,000 affair celebrated the centenary of the export of six bags of cotton from the United States in 1784. A dominant theme of the exposition was the improvement of education and the relation of learning to industrial progress. The grounds covered 247 acres, and attendance reached almost ten million. Eleven foreign governments and thirty-two states and territories officially exhibited. Information recorded in the volumes includes name, permanent residence, temporary residence, time remaining in New Orleans, and remarks. Arranged chronologically.
